Essential Driving Rules for Tourists in Spain

Spain is one of Europe's best road trip destinations, with excellent highways, beautiful coastlines, and fascinating cities. But before you hit the road, you need to understand Spanish driving rules to stay safe and avoid fines.

Speed Limits

Spain enforces speed limits strictly with radar cameras and police checks:

• Urban areas: 50 km/h (some zones 30 km/h)
• National roads: 90 km/h
• Dual carriageways: 100 km/h
• Highways (autopista/autovía): 120 km/h

Speeding fines range from €100 to €600 depending on how much you exceed the limit. Serious offenses can result in vehicle impoundment.

Traffic Rules

Key rules every tourist should know:

• Drive on the right side of the road
• Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants
• Children under 135cm must use appropriate child seats
• Mobile phone use while driving is prohibited (hands-free is allowed)
• Blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l (0.3 g/l for new drivers)
• Headlights must be used in tunnels and when visibility is poor
• You must carry a reflective vest and warning triangle (included in rental cars)

Roundabouts

Roundabouts (rotondas) are extremely common in Spain. Traffic already on the roundabout has priority. Signal right when exiting. Spanish drivers sometimes use roundabouts unpredictably — stay alert.

Toll Roads

Spain has two types of highways:

• Autovía (free highways) — marked with blue signs and "A-" prefix
• Autopista (toll highways) — marked with "AP-" prefix

Toll costs vary but are generally reasonable. Pay with cash or credit card at toll booths. Some newer sections use electronic tolling.

Parking

Street parking in Spanish cities uses color-coded zones:

• Blue zones — Paid parking, time-limited (1-2 hours). Buy a ticket from the meter.
• Green zones — Resident priority parking. Tourists can park for a limited time at higher rates.
• Yellow lines — No parking at any time.
• Underground parking — Available in all cities, €1-3/hour.

Parking fines are common and enforced. Always check signs carefully.

Low Emission Zones

Barcelona and Madrid have Low Emission Zones (ZBE/ZBE-C). Most modern rental cars comply, but check that your vehicle has the correct environmental sticker (Distintivo Ambiental). Non-compliant vehicles can face fines of €200+.
